Dozens
of cruise ships visit Caribean ports on a daily basis. We
have included a list of the majo cruise lines below:
The Largest of Them All!
The Queen Mary 2 is the largest passenger ship ever built, 345 metres long and as tall as a 23-storey building.
Construction on the world's most expensive liner began in 2002 at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard, owned by French heavy engineering firm Alstom.
The £550m, 2,620-passenger Cunard flagship is due to sail to Southampton, where the Queen is expected to officially name the vessel in a ceremony on 8 January, 2004.
Facilities will include 1,310 fully equipped staterooms and suites, nearly three-quarters of which will have their own private balcony. All accommodations will feature interactive televisions that allow guests to send and receive e-mail.
The ship will features 10 dining venues; several elegant bars and lounges; a spa and beauty centre operated by the world famous Canyon Ranch; the world's first shipboard planetarium; casino; library, staffed by trained librarians; a children's facility, complete with British nannies; indoor and outdoor swimming pools; hot tubs; duty-free boutiques; and a kennel, so depending upon quarantine restrictions, you can bring along your favourite pet.
On the technical side, the QM2 powerplant will include two gas turbines and four diesel engines. More than two-thirds of this energy will be used to power a state-of-the-art MermaidT Pod Propulsion System, comprised of two fixed and two azimuthing pod units. The first four-pod installation to date, the powerful new system will provide a speed of nearly 30 knots with low noise and vibration levels and maximum maneuverability.
